- The first Knysna Oyster Festival was in 1983 and known then as the Knysna Winter Festival.
- The Winter Festival consisted of only sporting events, including the now-famous forest marathon
- It was only in 1986 that cycling became part of the Knysna Winter Festival
- Today the Knysna Oyster Festival is famous for these pillar events, Knysna Cycle Tour and Knysna Forest Marathon
- The Knysna Cycle tour is always on the first weekend and the Knysna Forest Marathon on the second weekend
- Over the last few years, the Festival has built into many annual offerings such as wine festivals, sports tournaments, art competitions, and more.
- The Knysna Oyster Festival is now run by a management- and steering committee but relies on the community for events and activities
- In 2020 the Knysna Oyster Festival will be going virtual for the very first time
- The Knysna Oyster Festival is one of the most iconic festivals in South Africa and even popular with international audiences
- The Knysna Oyster Festival is renowned as being ‘The Best 10 Days of Winter’!
